1. The J word
Most runners are familiar with the runner vs. jogger debate. Ok, maybe debate is the wrong word. Either way – never make the mistake of calling a runner a jogger. Or asking how their jog went.

There’ve been many blog posts on this topic (see Are Runners Dangerous?), and I even mentioned it a while back. But I realized something recently at work.
I heard a coworker talking about a guy she knows to someone else and she mentioned he jogs.
Hearing the word thrown out so casually, it suddenly occurred to me. Did every non-runner call runners “joggers” because the word run just didn’t exist in their vocabulary, unless they were describing someone running away from something?
I reach out to my friend at work who I enlightened to the whole jog vs run thing a while back when he asked how my jog went.
“Did you ever call anyone a runner before I explained the different between run and jog to you?”
“Psh. Everyone was a jogger. Running was what you did when you were being chased by a bear. People ran away from things, they didn’t justΒ run.”
All this time, I thought people used run and jog interchangably, and whenever they said jog it was just a slip of the tongue. Turns out I was wrong all along.
2. Chuck 12
I’m running the Charles Street 12 this Saturday! I love races in Baltimore so much, I had to squeeze one more in before I move.
My plan in originally adding this race to my training plan for my fall half was to run the course at my usual long run pace. Now it’s just to enjoy the sites & finish the race smiling π
This will be my first point to point race too – I’m excited, but a little nervous about the logistics. I haven’t decided yet whether I’m going to park in my usual spot whenever I go to Baltimore, and run a 2-ish mile warm up to the shuttle bus, then 2-ish mile cool down after the race, or if I want to use one of the parking garages they recommend. Guess I better decide soon…
3. Hello, Rockville…
I’m moving 2 days after the race. Eek. I’ve been packing for the past week, and wow was I right remembering how much I hate moving. Finding the right place to pack everything, knowing when to pack things so I don’t find myself wishing I hadn’t taped up the box in the corner of my room. Cleaning once I’ve packed. Yuck.
I recently watched to stand up special on Netflix, and the comedian made a joke about one of the benefits of being blind: you’ll never have to help somebody move. #truth Lucky for me, I have friends willing & able to help.

However, I’m pretty darn excited to have a shorter commute to work! It should go from an hour to about 20-25 minutes.
What am I going to do with an extra hour + in my day? Hopefully take advantage of running with a club during the week! I’ve started looking for running clubs in the area and what they offer, and surprisingly, there aren’t many options. Unless I want to go all the way to DC (1. heck no. 2. I hate DC).
The club I have found that looks like it has a lot to offer (free races with membership, volunteer opportunities, runs with the club nearly every day of the week ranging from speed to easy to tempo), has me wary of the size. It’s advertised as one of the nation’s largest running clubs. While that might appeal to some people, the introvert in me is incredibly nervous. Runners are known for being a friendly and welcoming bunch, but I have a hard time getting to know people when there are Just. So. Many.
I’ve vowed to give it a goΒ and give it time once I move though. We’ll see how it all works out.
What’s new and exciting in your life?

Hey there! I noticed you were a baltimore runner and having just moved from there (Otterbein Neighborhood) about 4 months ago I enjoyed reading your experiences. Moving is awful but the way I kept positive was thinking about the fresh start in the new place, decorating, new routines…just so much room for life improvements π I found moving to Arlington, Va hard because I left behind my running group there (charm city run). Running clubs are so helpful to get to know the ins and outs of a new place and to maybe meet a running buddy! Have a great week of packing and best of luck in the newplace!
I love the idea of a fresh start in a new place, so that’s definitely the positive of moving π But I’m a little bummed I won’t be able to run in Baltimore as often, I love the city’s races!
I’m hoping I can make a few running buddies in a new club – right now all my running friends are online, so it’s not exactly easy to meet up for a run π
I recently moved just outside of Baltimore in Westminster…Arlington is very pretty though too!!! Have you found a new running group…that may help! I have never run with a running group before…
1. I hear you on the jogging thing. I cringe every time someone asks me how my jog went and I have to correct them. It’s the worst!
2. Good luck with your race! It sounds like fun!
3. Moving is seriously the worst thing ever. I just did it and I’m still recovering from it! I try not to tape any boxes in case I have to get back into them π And I also procrastinate!
Thank you! I didn’t think I’d be so excited to run a race that I wasn’t really planning on racing. But I was wrong, I’m psyched π
Haha, I’m a procrastinator too. I’m dreading packing up the rest of my bedroom. I’m not ready to live out of a bag with the bare minimum over the weekend!
Moving?! How exciting!!! A shorter commute is awesome! I had not heard of this race and now I am thinking about it!!!!!! Such short notice….but maybe!
Yes, I’m thrilled to have a shorter commute π though I will miss being so close to Baltimore.
This race would make great training for your upcoming half…just sayin’! π
Love the bit about runners and joggers, too funny! And I’m totally with you about the moving, not a big fan. We have a #3ThingsThursday link up happening if you’re interested in joining in π http://www.thewritebalance.ca/3-things-thursday-week-19/
It’s so funny how one little word can make the runners, typically such a happy bunch, so irritated. π
Thanks, I’ll check out the link up!
Sending you lots of happy moving vibes from up here in B-more! I hope you get all settled in fast and I think running with a club will be an excellent use of all your new time!
Thank you! The move was pretty quick & painless – now it’s on to unpacking…such fun π
I’m hoping to check out the club this weekend, wish me luck!
Moving is such a nuisance – I hope it went well!! π
Thank you! It went by pretty quickly – and thankfully the endless rain didn’t start until today. Whew π
